Opportunities
NewPipe e.V. is looking for two paid contractors to support the next steps in NewPipe's journey. At this time, we can only work with independent contractors who can emit invoices. We pay for work by the hour, and we envision to pay all our existing and new contractors the same rate of 32 EUR / hour (excl. VAT if applicable).
Relying on AI/LLM tools in the scope of work for the e.V. is not welcome.
The application process takes place via email. Please include a few lines about what relevant experiences you have for the respective position and, if available, a website or git platform account we could look at. We do not expect a full CV or other documentation. You have time until at least 23.10.2026 AoE (Anywhere on Earth) to apply. We may decide to extend the deadline if the position remains vacant, which would be announced on this page.
After this date, we will get back to you as soon as we can. This however may take us longer than usual, i.e. multiple weeks, because the NewPipe e.V. board is working on a voluntary basis. The following steps in the hiring process are getting to know you and your expertise in an interview, and then discussing contractual details before finally singing the contracts.
The basis for the decision to fill the roles described below is a discussion at the 9th plenum assembly. You can read about our prior contracts, in chronological order, here, here and here.
To summarize…
- Freelance contractor anywhere in the world
- Compensation: 32 EUR / hour (excl. VAT if applicable)
- Deadline: 23.10.2026 AoE
Android developer for NewPipe & NewPlayer
We are looking for a developer to bring forward a major step in the still-ongoing refactor of the NewPipe app: the player component, to be replaced with NewPlayer. Your main task would be to rework core NewPipe components such that they work together nicely with NewPlayer's architecture. Thus, the task is essentially to bring together a legacy Java codebase (that should be ported to Kotlin) and a fresh Kotlin codebase. You would be working in close contact with other TeamNewPipe members and open pull requests to NewPipe, NewPlayer and NewPipeExtractor, making it essential that code contributions not only work, but are also of a readable and maintainable quality.
Requirements for the position:- Native Android development (Java or Kotlin)
- Version control system (git)
- Experience with media players, preferably ExoPlayer
- Modern Android development practices (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Dependency Injection, etc.)
- Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform / Compose Multiplatform
- Contributed to open source projects in the past
This contract will have a total volume of approximately 500 hours over a span of roughly a year.
UX Audit
NewPipe is seeking to improve its user experience in the scope of the ongoing refactor, and therefore would like a UI / UX expert to deliver a report for use as a reference for NewPipe contributors towards fixing existing features or implementing new ones. It should, at its core, focus on the following topics:
- Which pain points impact the user experience in the NewPipe app the most?
- How can these problems be solved?
- What is a good prioritization / schedule for improving NewPipe's UX?
- We rely on your expertise to tell us what we need. Nobody on the team can mentor this position.
- Since NewPipe is an open source project, the report will be published at the latest when it is done (ideally earlier!), thus exposing it to feedback and criticism directly from end users.
If that sounds exciting to you, we would be more than happy to hear from you.
At the aforementioned rate, the budget we envision can pay for 100–200 hours of work. The work can flexibly be spread out over a duration of a few months.
We hope to hire future UI / UX work from the same contractor (subject to budgetary concerns).
