NewPipe e.V. contracts Aayush and Ida for NewPipe development
2026-03-29
Thanks to your increasing financial support, we are happy to announce that we hired two part-time contractors for the NewPipe project!
As seen in the 2025 and 2026 budget plans, the largest chunk of our donations is allocated towards NewPipe development. In September 2025 we thus announced an open position on our website, and thanks to the people that shared this announcement around, we got many wonderful applications! Running a campaign to look for contractors was something completely new to us, but thanks to help from many NewPipe e.V. and TeamNewPipe members, we were able to quickly establish a process that allowed us to confidently select two of the applicants.
Aayush's contract started in Autumn 2025, and is mainly focused on completing the NewPipe refactor and progressively adopting refactored code in main NewPipe releases. You might know Aayush already from his work on Aurora Store, CalyxOS, and other open source Android projects, for which we should all be thankful.
Ida's contract started in Spring 2026, and her tasks will be similar to Aayush's, with a focus on migrating the NewPipe UI to Compose. Ida is also invested in promoting open source ideals, through contributions to apps like RelaySMS, and also through events aimed at fostering the OSS community in Cameroon.
You might wonder why we opted for two part-time freelance contracts instead of a single full-time one: the reason is that in collaborative projects like NewPipe, it is important to discuss and review each other's code before shipping it to the user, to limit accidental mistakes or suboptimal design choices. But besides looking over each other's work, Ida and Aayush also review and merge Pull Requests from NewPipe contributors, pushing forward the project and reducing contributions that are left hanging.
To conclude, we are proud to put to good use the wonderful amount of donations you keep sending us! Let's all wish Aayush and Ida a pleasant experience contributing to NewPipe!
Yours Sincerely,
the NewPipe e.V. board.
